soccer star Stephen Appiah helps Turks win
Fenerbahce 3 PSV Einhoven 0
AUSTRALIA coach Guus Hiddink endured a frustrating 90 minutes as
his 10-man PSV Eindhoven side was outplayed in the Champions
League today (AEST), losing 3-0 to Turkish side Fenerbahce.
Brazil
midfielder Alex inspired the Turks, scoring twice and dictating
the tempo.
Fenerbahce, eager to atone for a 3-1 defeat in the opening game
with AC Milan, dominated much of the first-half against an
injury-ravaged Dutch side which chose to play a cautious game.
The
referee awarded Fenerbahce a penalty and booked PSV striker Jan
Vennegoor of Hesselink in the 39th minute for handling a ball
that was about to fall for Turkish defender Luciano.
Alex
easily beat Dutch keeper Gomes from the spot.
The
setback whipped PSV back into the game, but Hiddink's side found
itself deep in trouble when Vennegoor was handed a second yellow
card and dismissed after tugging Fenerbahce midfielder Selcuk's
shirt.
Fenerbahce turned on the style in the second-half and Alex head
a second in the 68th minute after a superb cross from French
striker Nicolas Anelka.
PSV's best effort came in the 88th minute when American striker
Beasley shot straight at keeper Volkan.
But the Turks
put the finishing touch on their conclusive victory when Ghana
midfielder Stephen Appiah's right-footed shot beat Gomes.
The win puts Fenerbahce in second
place along with PSV Eindhoven – each with three points – in
Group E.
They
are a point behind group leaders AC Milan which drew 2-2 with
Schalke in Germany.
